An evolving textile design showcase and sale featuring playful interpretations of theme, scale and material from emerging and established makers from Glasgow and London.

There's a beautiful selection of scarves, jewellery, bags, cushions and a chair to start with, with lots more to come over the next couple of weeks. I'll be sharing some photos and designer features with you all next week!

2 dimensions to 3 dimensions by 4 designers

234D is a collaborative project between FAB3D and Welcome Home, which fuses craft with digital fabrication technologies to produce a range of innovative lighting. The exhibition and project launch will feature work by four Glasgow based designers – Amanda Faulkner Whalen, Black Arches, Chloe Highmore and Fun Makes Good.

The project translates 2D patterns to 3D designs resulting in 4 pieces of contemporary lighting. 234D is about working in new ways and challenging the traditional design process with technology and vice versa.

Welcome Home is looking for designers and makers for a showcase throughout July 2011. Fabricated will present both a traditional and contemporary take on textile design, we would like to see new ways of working and unique ideas. How do you use fabric or textile techniques in your work? There will be a playful interpretation of theme, scale and material as well as the beautiful products you would expect to see – get involved and show us your wares! Welcome Home turned one on Sunday 3rd October 2010! I can't believe how quickly this year has gone past, it's true - time flies when you're having fun!

Hanna Tuulikki is a vocalist, songwriter and multi instrumentalist with the band Nalle, a trio with Aby Vulliamy and Chris Hladowski. She is also a visual artist, whose intricate illustrations adorn the covers of their albums. To celebrate the release of Wilder Shores of Love, their third studio album, Welcome Home will exhibit the original drawings that make up the album artwork. A small edition of deluxe 180g LPs with hand drawn and screen-printed covers will also be on display alongside the CD and LP releases.

Nalle have been performing together since 2004, drawing audiences into their unique and intimate sound world. Spearheaded by Tuulikki’s expressive vocals, the music is underpinned by intuitive group interplay on an array of instruments from the four corners of the globe, variously described as avant folk, psychedelic and free folk. Members of the group also play with Two Wings, The One Ensemble, A Hawk And A Hacksaw, The Family Elan, and The National Jazz Trio of Scotland.

Their new album Wilder Shores Of Love produced with John Cavanagh and released with Alt.Vinyl, is named after the painting by Cy Twombly and inspired by the Greek myth of Hero and Leander. The songs make use of recurring motifs and metaphors, weaving strong narrative tapestries about love lost and found, inner mindscapes and outer landscapes, getting lost on the journey, and finding understanding.

The cover art plays an important role in the overall experience of the album, connecting and bringing to life the imagery and symbolism in the lyrics. Each song fits together with a drawing, building a portrait of personal experiences.

Vinyl and now even CDs are in decline with the increasing popularity of downloading music from the web. This exhibition highlights the beauty of vinyl as an art object in its own right and an opportunity to see the original artwork before it has been scaled down to fit on the cover of a CD and LP. All artwork, LPs and CDs will be available to buy from Welcome Home.

Product of the week

This is a bit late this week as a result of this weekend's Set in Stone jewellery showcase and a great opening for it on Friday night! The product of the week comes from one of the designers featured in Set in Stone, A Alicia Accessories - combining jewellery and textiles her pieces are beautiful, unusual yet wearable. Welcome Home is proud to present Set in Stone, a weekend jewellery showcase featuring pieces or small collections by over 10 designers including A Alicia Accessories, Abigail Percy, Alison Macleod, Georgia Wiseman, Jennifer Gray, Jenny Sweetnam, Leah Black, Lynn Cockburn, Ruth Swan and Vanessa Ward.

Opening on Friday 21st May 6.30-9pm for the preview and then open to the public on Saturday 22nd May 10-6pm and Sunday 23rd May 12-5pm, Set in Stone will take over the upstairs gallery space at Welcome Home with a beautifully curated exhibition and sale of unique and contemporary handcrafted jewellery. With an array of talented designers both local and from further afield, emerging and established, there will be something to suit all budgets and tastes.

On the preview night there will also be the chance to see models wearing clothes from Chouchou Couture, which is making its debut at Welcome Home and new scarves from Pringle & Murray, which are also arriving at the same time. It’s not to be missed!

catching up...

Things have been busy at Welcome Home recently and this space has been neglected somewhat. I've uploaded lots of photos of recent (and not so recent) exhibitions to Flickr so do have a look. Knotical was taken down yesterday and I was sad to see it go, it was a great exhibition put together by the very talented and lovely Lynn Cockburn or (Lynnda Needles) during her residency here. You can read a couple of nice reviews courtesy of hyggelig handmade and diamonds in the dirt - thanks again!

This Friday it's the opening of Sketchbook here from 6.30-9pm... Glasgow Podcart presents Sketchbook at Welcome Home, 17th-25th April. An interactive exhibition of sketches, scribbles and inspirations from the fingers and minds of artists, writers and musicians. Hopefully see you there! Anyway, spring is in the air and there's lots more to share so I will be back again soon...

Knotical

An exhibition of contemporary textile works designed and hand made by Lynn Cockburn. Lynn’s work explores and practises a type of work where useful and decorative items are made by hand using only simple tools. The use of hands and lack of machines impart individuality to each item, which is lacking in manufactured goods.

For the week 21st – 26th March 2010 Lynn will be a resident at Welcome Home in Glasgow. Here she plans to explore the possibilities of re-applying these traditional craft techniques and hippie handicraft to items that may be functional, interactive or strictly decorative.

She will experiment with macramé, knotting and exaggerated proportion through the development of a large scale hanging and interactive artwork. Along with trying to combine the disciplines of art, craft, design and fashion by incorporating different materials and articles into the work.

She wants to explore a strong visual interplay with textures and materials so plans to use a colour palette of mainly whites: inspired from ageing spines of books on her bookshelves, including the putty shade of cotton twine, the bright nautical white of cotton rope to the warm natural shade of roving.

She will look to her professional training, interests in practising established techniques and her upbringing in Scotland, with its rich textile heritage, for inspiration.

Join us for the private view on Friday 26th March from 6.30-9pm. The exhibition runs from 27th March - 11th April.

Fully Furnished

Fully Furnished is a furniture showcase on for one weekend only featuring pieces by designers Hamish Bigg, John Galvin, Pippa Johnson, Steff Norwood, Gerry Thomson and Eleanor Young. Please join us at Welcome Home on Friday 12th March between 6.30 and 9pm for a drink, a chance to meet the designers and a fun evening set amongst some beautiful furniture. Fully Furnished will be open to the public on Saturday 13th March, 10-6pm and Sunday 14th March, 12-5pm.

Strawberry Fields

Welcome Home is proud to present “Strawberry Fields” its first exhibition of 2010.Strawberry Fields is being organised by Edinburgh based illustrator and recent graduate Genevieve Ryan, assisted by curators Mhari McMullan (of Welcome Home) and Janie Nicoll, with overall design of the publication by Ryan R Thompson. The artists involved are Seiko Kato, Chihiro Kyozuka, Sara Thielker, Richard Sanderson, Jonathan Hall, Lizzy Stewart, Ben Phillips, Katie Thomas, Matthew Swan, Sarah Tanat-Jones, Verity Keniger, Lindsay Mcbirnie, Robbie Porter, Neil Perry, Andrew Denholm, Jenni Saarenkyla, Callum Kellie, Louise McLennan, Tamsyn Mystkowski, Janie Nicoll, Ryan R Thompson, Martin Baillie, Lesley Barnes, Rosie Wood, Ursula Cheng, Jenni Saarenkyla, Libby Walker and last but not least Genevieve Ryan herself.

Strawberry Fields is a collaborative project to showcase work by emerging and established artists, based on the song Strawberry Fields Forever by The Beatles.

The aim of this project is to produce a publication, which captures the creative magic of more than 25 artists from a range of disciplines. Each of the illustrators, graphic designers and photographers has created a very individual response to the groundbreaking record.

The project is also running as part of collaboration month on Central Station, an online network for artists and designers. Central Station provided funding towards this project and was the platform upon which many of the people involved in Strawberry Fields came together. Strawberry Fields will showcase many fresh, new talents alongside more established artists and provide them with the kind of unique promotional opportunity that can be difficult for emerging artists to create alone. The collected work will be published and sold across the UK in galleries, online and in specialist bookshops. The exhibition opens at Welcome Home on Friday 5th February 6.30-9pm and is open to the public from 6th to 21st February, see you there...
